Transport Methods

This is a radiation-hydrodynamics simulation of a comet (in red) striking the ground (in solid blue). Adaptive mesh refinement reduces the overall computational requirements by coarsening the mesh in some regions and refining it in other regions to capture solution detail.

We Apply Computational Methods and Tools to Important Problems

The Transport Methods Group creates numerical radiation transport methods to support the United States’ weapons program, and it produces packages for use in Advanced Strategic Computing codes. It develops computational tools that simulate the transport of radiation—charged particles, neutrons, photons, and neutrinos. Applications of these tools range from simulating nuclear reactions to studying the life cycles of stars. Team members have expertise in fields including transport theory, numerical methods, software engineering practices, and large-scale parallel computing.
